A call to let the flames of the Hanukkah candles inspire us to action.

This song was born out of my passion to find personal engagement with the celebration of Hanukkah - something I could take away and put into action.

Lyrics

WITH THIS FLAME
Words & Music by Karen J Kamenetsky

We are called the chosen people
I wonder, what have I been chosen to do?
Tikkun, tikkun olam is the commandment
Repair the world, where do I start?

Now in the darkness of December
Comes a story to inspire
Of courage in the face of tyranny
Of light that triumphs over dark

There’s a menorah in the window on the first night of Hanukkah
We light one candle and praise your name
It starts here, with this flame
One little light against the darkness, one tiny candle all aglow
We sing blessings and proclaim
It starts here, with this flame

When it seems the world is broken
So much to fix I don’t know where to begin
What can one person do to make a difference?
Where do I go to make a start?

Remember that one jug of oil
That burned eight days instead of one
A miracle we still recall today
Proof that light can push back the dark

There’s a menorah in the window on the first night of Hanukkah
We light one candle and praise your name
It starts here, with this flame
One little light against the darkness, one tiny candle all aglow
We sing blessings and proclaim
it starts here, with this flame

With this flame we recall the miracle
With this flame we praise your name.
With this flame we send our light into the world

There’s a menorah in the window on the first night of Hanukkah
We light one candle and praise your name
It starts here, with this flame
One little light against the darkness, one tiny candle all aglow
We sing blessings and proclaim
It starts here, with this flame
